Join a server, pick the Driver role and spawn a train from the menu. Use the throttle to accelerate, the brake to slow down and the reverser to change direction. Watch the signals — red means stop, yellow warns, green means go — and respect the route speed limits to avoid penalties. Practise on a short local route first before trying the intercity mainline.

The guard rides on a friend's train and handles the passenger side of the service. You check tickets as passengers board, control the doors at each stop and use the intercom to coordinate with the driver. Guards earn coins for every completed service, making it a great role for players who enjoy teamwork and learning the network.

The Class 80X fleet has the highest top speed and is the best performer on intercity services, but it is expensive. For most players the Class 43 HST is the best all-round value — nearly as fast, more affordable and not dependent on electrified lines. Beginners should start with a cheap Class 150 and work up.

Drive or guard long intercity services, which pay the most per trip, and claim your daily bonuses. Driving cleanly matters too, because red-signal and overspeed penalties reduce your payout. Once you can afford a faster express, you can complete long services more quickly and earn even more per session.

The intercity mainline is the longest continuous run on the network and the best route for grinding coins and driver XP in a single trip. Short local loops like the Cuffley Loop offer quick turnaround runs, but the mainline marathon pays the most per journey.

The tier list is reviewed after every major British Railway update, because balance changes and new train classes shift the rankings. New trains like the Class 43 HST arrive with each big version, so check the updates category alongside the tier list for the clearest picture of the current best trains.

V1.4.2, 'The Western Update', added the iconic Class 43 HST and the Class 175 local train, plus the new Pencarn extension with its bridges and viaducts. The update was released in August 2026 and is one of the most significant in the game's history because the Class 43 is the face of British Railway.
